Makalu Basecamp trekking is a popular wilderness trek in the eastern part of Nepal and is a very demanding adventure destination for nature lovers. Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered quite a remote wilderness solitary trek with an absolutely quiet and hardcore trek. The trek goes via harder high-altitude terrains lots of stone steps and rocky paths, landslide areas, narrow paths, snow-covered- glacial landscapes, heavy den lush forests, River streams, tremendously standing rock hills, and snow-covered passes. It is protected by the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Project which was established in 1992, it has varieties of flora and fauna, stunning landscapes, culture, tradition, beautiful mountains, and pristine forest. The Makalu 8463m is the fifth-world highest Mountain situated in between Solukhumbu and Shankhuwashabha districts. The dense rhododendron and fir forest, tropical Arun Valley and alpine meadows, Chamlang Himal, and Barun Valley are fantastic opportunities to explore. Adventure trekking Sherpeni col also goes from the same way and low altitude Arun Valley trekking resumed in the same place. Makalu region has a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations; the Makalu Barun area offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna. Plants of all major ecological zones, tropical, sub-tropical, temperate, alpine, and sub-alpine are remarkably available. Makalu region is culturally diversified with Sherpa ethnical group in the highlands.

For the Makalu basecamp trek, we fly from Kathmandu to Tumglingtar in the East and then we have to make 4 hours of off-road driving to Num by private jeep. The very basic tea houses on the trekking trails are the places where we get hot and tasty Food, Soups, and Masala Tea. Makalu Trekking trail is filled with Buddhist areas and hence we will pass through the various Manies and Buddhist Prayer flags adorned on the high passes or Deurali. The trek is a doorway wilderness adventure while others have circuits. You must return along the same trail you climb up and fly out.

Itinerary

We fly around 35 minutes from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport in the morning and pick up a private jeep drive from Airport to Num village.

Follow the trail steep down to Arun Koshi through the greenery farming terraced field. Cross the river over the suspension bridge and continue steeply ascending to Murmidanda/ Sheduwa overnight tea house.

Pass the national park forestry project, and cross several streams on stones or temporary bamboo bridges. Gradual climbing to Chyantedanda, terraced farm field, meadows, and forest glades to the last permanent settlement Tashi gaun.5 hours walking.

Climb over the ridge through the forest to steam, this stage involves 1400m of steep climbing to Chipla, overhanging rock, and small pastures to the crest of Khongma danda. Behind the small ridge, an old party house is built under the cliff for porters.

Climb the ridge on steep switchbacks to scrubby rhododendrons forest, mossy boulders line to a Chorten, and up to Thutu La. Drop to Kalo pokari and cross the Shipton La (4216m) and a long descends and ascends to another pass Kekela. Then the trail dips into a pretty valley with pine, rhododendron, and bamboo forest to Mumbuk.

The trail drops down to Barun Valley to stream and turn to the west valley. Pass the alpine forest, cross the Barun River on a wooden bridge, and rise to the ridge.

We have long gentle climbing by passing the charkas, strange sky touching the Rocky Mountains, cluster herders' huts and prayer flags, and arid landscape of sand and gravel. There is a trail on both sides of the rocky valley to Sherson a wide yak pasture field.

The trek is very enjoyable with majestic views of the Himalayans, Geographically amazed, passing through rhododendron alpine forest and yaks pasture fields. The day makes it a challenging and rewarding adventure trip into the deep Himalayas. Overnight at a simple tea house

There are choices either to go to Makalu base camp or climb the ridge northeast of Sherson. You cannot have a nice view from the Makalu basecamp instead of rocks, sands, and ice also it is not fixed for all seasons. Expeditionary can sit where ever they want. If you climb the northeast ridge, you would see nicely this world's fifth mountain, Everest, Lhotse, and Kanchanjunga faces but there is no fixed trail to climb.
