The ancestors of the Tamang ethnic originally came from Tibet as Trans- -Himalayan traders thousands of years ago. They primarily brought salt from Tibet and exchanged it with grains in Nepal. Ta means horse and Mang means searcher in the Tibetan language which means an ethnic who were doing trades by riding horses derived from TAMANG today. They were nomadic Trans- -Himalayan traders and settled in the hilly region of Nepal.
Tamang practices Buddhism however some of their culture is mixed with Hindu tradition. They have their own unique ceremonies, language, customs, arts, and music. Tungna is a very popular musical instrument among the Tamang community. Most of the villages around Kathmandu and Rasuwa district are covered by the Tamang ethnic group. There is a heavy density of Tamang people in most of the villages around the Tamang heritage area. The way of life, ancient design of he household, hospitality, and friendly atmosphere are enjoyable harvesting for being around here. Sadly, they were among the worst affected groups during the 2015 earthquake. Because of the devastating earthquake natural Hot springs at Tatopani have vanished away.
