Annapurna Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trek

khopra

The Annapurna Mardi Himal and Khopra Danda Trek is an extraordinary off-the-beaten-path adventure through the beautiful foothills of the Annapurna region. This remarkable journey combines traditional mountain villages, the iconic viewpoints, and some of the region's most peaceful and less-explored trekking trails.

The trek offers spectacular panoramic views of some of the world's highest mountains, including Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091 m), and Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), along with the magnificent Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Nilgiri, and numerous other snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Along the way, you will discover breathtaking mountain landscapes, rolling alpine meadows, diverse natural ecosystems, and beautiful forest trails.

The Annapurna region offers trekking opportunities ranging from short one-day excursions to extended month-long adventures. This particular itinerary provides a wonderful combination of moderate to challenging trekking experiences, gradually gaining altitude through traditional villages, lush forests, alpine landscapes, and spectacular mountain viewpoints. With several connecting trails and alternative routes, the journey can be customised to suit your available time, preferred pace, and trekking interests.

One of the greatest attractions of this trek is its flexibility. It can be tailored for trekkers with varying levels of experience and physical fitness, with opportunities to shorten, extend, or adjust the itinerary according to individual preferences. Whether you are looking for a relatively easy mountain holiday or a more adventurous Himalayan journey, this region offers something special for everyone.

The outstanding Himalayan scenery, peaceful trails, authentic cultural experiences, and fewer crowds make this trek particularly rewarding. It is an excellent choice for families, adventure enthusiasts, Christmas and New Year holidaymakers, and travellers with limited vacation time who wish to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas within a relatively short period.

Spring is especially enchanting, when the hillsides transform into colourful natural gardens with blooming red, pink, and white rhododendrons. Autumn also offers exceptional mountain views and ideal trekking conditions.

Itinerary

The drive takes approximately 7–9 hours, depending on road conditions, traffic, and weather. Following the Prithvi Highway, we travel alongside beautiful river valleys, terraced hillsides, traditional villages, and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Along the way, we stop for breakfast or lunch and refreshments at a roadside restaurant.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, we transfer to our hotel and check in. The rest of the day is free to relax, explore the beautiful lakeside area, or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Phewa Lake, with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.

If you do not want a day long drive then can take a flight from Kathmandu. The flight takes only 35 minutes and can fly any time. We will organize flight tickets upon your demand with additional fligh cost.

rest

After breakfast at 7:00 AM, we take a scenic private drive of approximately 1.5 hours to Kande, where our trekking adventure begins.

From Kande, we start walking uphill towards Australian Camp, following a beautiful mountain trail through traditional settlements and lush green landscapes. As we gain elevation, spectacular views of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the magnificent Annapurna Himalayan range gradually unfold before us. On a clear day, we may also enjoy distant views of Mount Manaslu, making this an exciting introduction to the Himalayan trekking experience.

After a relaxing break at Australian Camp to enjoy the breathtaking mountain panorama, we continue towards Pothana and then Bichok Deurali. This section of the trail is relatively comfortable, passing through peaceful forests, charming villages, and beautiful natural surroundings.

Bichok Deurali (2,200 m) is a small and picturesque mountain settlement with several welcoming lodges. Situated in a beautiful location, it offers wonderful views of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and the impressive Mount Dhaulagiri.

Upon arrival, we settle into our lodge and enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere, surrounded by the natural beauty and spectacular scenery of the Annapurna region.

lowcamp

Today's trek from Pittam Deurali to Low Camp takes us through the enchanting forests of the Annapurna region, surrounded by a rich variety of Himalayan vegetation. The trail winds through beautiful, dense woodland featuring magnificent rhododendron trees, fir, hemlock, bamboo, and other native mountain plants.

The first section of the walk is relatively comfortable, with gentle ups and downs along peaceful forest trails. We gradually make our way towards Forest Camp, enjoying the refreshing mountain air, birdsong, and tranquil atmosphere of the Himalayan wilderness.

Forest Camp is a lovely resting place with several welcoming tourist lodges. We stop here for lunch and take some time to relax before continuing our journey.

After lunch, the trail climbs steadily from Forest Camp towards Low Camp, passing deeper into beautiful rhododendron forests. The peaceful woodland surroundings and occasional glimpses of the mountains make this uphill section particularly enjoyable.

Eventually, we arrive at Low Camp, where we settle into our lodge and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the mountains, preparing for the spectacular Himalayan views awaiting us on the following day's trek.

mardihigh-camp

Today's trek from Low Camp to Mardi Himal High Camp is one of the most spectacular sections of the journey, offering breathtaking mountain scenery throughout the day. The trail gradually climbs along a beautiful mountain ridge, opening up to magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

As we ascend, the impressive mountains of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli appear directly in front of us, rising majestically against the sky. Their magnificent reflections of light and shadow, together with views of several other Himalayan peaks, create an unforgettable mountain experience.

Along the way, we take a relaxing break at Badal Danda, one of the finest viewpoints on the Mardi Himal trail. Famous for its spectacular 360-degree mountain panoramas, this beautiful ridge offers incredible views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

After enjoying the scenery and capturing some memorable photographs, we continue our gradual ascent along the ridge towards Mardi Himal High Camp. The peaceful mountain atmosphere, dramatic landscapes, and ever-changing Himalayan views make this a truly special day of trekking.

Today, we set off very early in the morning, hiking by flashlight beneath the starry Himalayan sky towards the spectacular Mardi Himal viewpoint. After reaching the viewpoint, we continue for approximately another hour to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), where an unforgettable Himalayan panorama awaits us.

Mardi Himal Base Camp is surrounded by beautiful high-altitude alpine pastureland, traditionally used for grazing sheep, goats, cattle, and yaks. Scattered across the open meadows are small traditional herders' huts, where visitors can enjoy freshly prepared tea, coffee, and a simple but delicious Nepalese-style breakfast while taking in the magnificent mountain scenery.

After spending time enjoying the incredible views and peaceful atmosphere, we hike back down to High Camp. The round-trip excursion to Mardi Himal Base Camp takes approximately four hours, depending on the weather and walking pace. We return to our lodge at High Camp for a well-deserved lunch.

After lunch, we continue our descent for approximately 1.5 hours to Badal Danda (3,400 m), one of the most spectacular viewpoints along the Mardi Himal trekking route. Here, we can relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the Annapurna Himalayan range, including the magnificent Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes and beautiful cloud formations.

It is a truly rewarding day, combining an unforgettable sunrise experience, high-altitude adventure, traditional Himalayan pastureland, and some of the finest mountain views in the Annapurna region.

Mardi Base Camp

oday, we descend from Badal Danda towards the picturesque old Gurung village of Landruk, following beautiful mountain trails through the heart of the Annapurna foothills. The journey takes us along traditional stone steps, winding gently downhill through dense rhododendron forests and peaceful woodland paths.

Along the way, enjoy breathtaking mountain views, lush green hillsides, and the tranquil atmosphere of the surrounding landscape. The quiet, meditative trails offer a wonderful opportunity to slow down, reconnect with nature, and appreciate the beauty of the Himalayan countryside.

As we gradually descend, the forest opens up to reveal terraced fields and traditional mountain settlements. Eventually, we arrive at Landruk, a charming and historic Gurung village nestled on the hillside, where traditional stone houses, welcoming locals, and authentic mountain culture create a truly memorable experience.

We follow the trail along the right bank of the beautiful Modi River towards Nayapul. Today's walk takes us through a spectacular river gorge, passing cascading waterfalls and enjoying an entertaining jungle walk surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of nature.

By lunchtime, we arrive at Jhinudanda, a peaceful mountain village nestled beside the river. After settling in and enjoying lunch, we head to the natural hot springs around midday for a relaxing bath. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters is a wonderful way to unwind and rejuvenate after our trek, while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.

tadapani

There are two distinct trekking routes from Jhinudanda to Tadapani, each offering a unique experience through the beautiful Annapurna foothills. One trail climbs from the old Komrung Danda and other climbs via Chhomrung Danda.

The old route via Komrung Danda is our recommended option for trekking from Jhinudanda to Tadapani. Compared with the alternative via Chhomrong Danda and Kimrung Khola, the Komrung route offers a more enjoyable walking experience, beautiful mountain scenery, and a shorter trekking distance. It also provides a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional Gurung villages, ancient pastureland, and peaceful rhododendron forests.

The route via Chhomrong Danda is also scenic, particularly for those who wish to explore terraced agricultural fields and enjoy a lunch stop near Kimrung Khola before continuing through Chuile village.

However, considering the views, walking distance, and overall trekking experience, we recommend taking the old trail via Komrung Danda directly to Tadapani, avoiding the detour through Chuile.

dobato

After breakfast at Tadapani, begin your trek towards Dobato, following a beautiful and less-travelled trail through the magnificent forests of the Annapurna foothills. Today's journey takes you away from the busier trekking routes and into a peaceful natural environment filled with lush vegetation and spectacular mountain scenery.

The trail gradually climbs and descends along forested ridges, passing through enchanting rhododendron, oak, and bamboo forests. During spring, the trail becomes particularly beautiful as colourful red, pink, and white rhododendron flowers transform the hillsides into a natural garden.

As you gain elevation, occasional openings in the forest reveal magnificent views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and deep valleys. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, birdsong, and the wonderful diversity of Himalayan vegetation along the way.

After several hours of enjoyable walking, you will reach Dobato, a beautiful mountain settlement surrounded by pristine forests and spectacular Himalayan landscapes.

Dobato is also an excellent overnight destination for an early morning excursion to the famous Muldai Viewpoint, one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the Annapurna region. Prepare for an unforgettable sunrise adventure the following morning.

Wake up very early in the morning and begin hiking towards the spectacular Muldai Viewpoint with a flashlight or headlamp. Muldai is one of the finest and most impressive panoramic viewpoints along the Annapurna trekking trails, offering breathtaking sunrise views over the magnificent Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

Enjoy the magical moment as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Spend some time appreciating the extraordinary mountain panorama before descending to your lodge in Dobato for a well-deserved breakfast.

After breakfast, pack your belongings and begin trekking towards Chistibang. Today's trail is particularly scenic, offering uninterrupted mountain views, expansive alpine meadows, beautiful ridgelines, and peaceful forest pathways.

The tranquil walking trails wind through enchanting alpine forests and open mountain pastures, creating a wonderfully relaxing and almost meditative trekking experience. Along the way, enjoy the changing Himalayan landscapes, fresh mountain air, and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks.

Today's journey is a beautiful combination of sunrise adventure, peaceful nature walks, and magnificent Himalayan scenery.

Chistibang

Today's trek involves a steady and rewarding uphill climb from Chistibang to Khopra Danda. Start early in the morning and gradually ascend through beautiful alpine landscapes, enjoying increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains. Arriving at Khopra Danda with plenty of time allows you to make the most of this magnificent mountain destination.

There are several exciting options to explore during the day, depending on your interests, energy, and weather conditions. For adventure enthusiasts, a full-day excursion to the sacred Khayer Lake (approximately 4,600 m) is an excellent option. You can carry a packed lunch and enjoy this challenging high-altitude journey through remote alpine terrain and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Alternatively, you can hike a little higher towards the beautiful alpine pastures, where magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and valleys await. If you prefer a more relaxed day, enjoy shorter walks and nearby excursions around Khopra Danda before returning to the community lodge.

Whether you choose a challenging alpine adventure or a peaceful exploration of the surrounding hills, Khopra Danda offers an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

khopra

Wake up early in the morning and enjoy the spectacular Himalayan sunrise from Khopra Danda before having breakfast at the community lodge. Today is one of the most adventurous and rewarding days of your Khopra Ridge trekking experience, as you will explore the sacred and remote Khayer Lake (Khayer Baraha), nestled high in the Annapurna Himalayas at approximately 4,600 m.

After breakfast, begin your challenging round-trip hike towards Khayer Lake. The trail follows remote alpine landscapes, crossing rugged mountain terrain, open pastures, and rocky sections beneath the magnificent Annapurna South and surrounding Himalayan peaks. As you gain elevation, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, offering extraordinary views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and deep valleys.

Khayer Lake is a sacred pilgrimage destination, particularly significant to Hindu devotees. Surrounded by magnificent Himalayan scenery, this beautiful high-altitude lake offers a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. During the annual Janai Purnima festival, pilgrims traditionally visit the lake to worship Khayer Baraha.

Spend some time enjoying the breathtaking surroundings, capturing photographs, and appreciating the natural and spiritual significance of this remote Himalayan sanctuary.

After exploring the lake, retrace your steps along the same trail and descend to Khopra Danda. The return journey is equally rewarding, with magnificent mountain panoramas accompanying you along the way. Upon reaching Khopra Danda, relax at the community lodge and enjoy a warm meal after this unforgettable high-altitude adventure.

Walking duration: Approximately 9–11 hours round trip, depending on weather, trail conditions, and walking pace.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast at Khopra Danda Community Lodge while admiring the incredible panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After breakfast, begin your descent towards Chistibang and continue through beautiful, peaceful woodland trails.

Today's walk is particularly enjoyable, taking you through tranquil forests filled with birdsong and the soothing sounds of flowing rivers and mountain streams. Along the way, you will occasionally pass small human settlements, while most of the trail winds through diverse Himalayan vegetation, including oak, pine, bamboo, rhododendron, hemlock, and many other native plant species.

The trail is predominantly downhill, making today's journey relatively easy, relaxing, and enjoyable. As you gradually descend through the enchanting forest landscapes, you will eventually arrive at Swanta Village, a traditional and relatively untouched mountain settlement that offers an authentic glimpse into rural Himalayan life.

Enjoy a relaxing afternoon and make the most of your free time in this peaceful village. You can do your laundry, enjoy a refreshing drink, read a book, write in your travel journal, or simply explore the village and interact with the friendly local people.

Take this opportunity to slow down, embrace the simplicity of mountain life, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the local community.

After breakfast, continue your journey from Swanta Village towards Ghorepani. The trail gradually climbs uphill, with some steep sections featuring traditional stone staircases, passing through beautiful forests and charming mountain landscapes.

After approximately four hours of walking, you will reach Ghorepani, usually around midday. If the weather is clear and you still have enough time and energy, you can make an optional afternoon hike to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint to enjoy its magnificent Himalayan panoramas.

However, if you wish to experience the most spectacular sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, we recommend saving your Poon Hill excursion for the following early morning.

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, beautiful mountain surroundings, and heavenly charm of Ghorepani.Ghorepani

Wake up early in the morning, around 5:00 AM, and hike to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint to witness a spectacular Himalayan sunrise. The uphill walk takes approximately 45 minutes, following a beautiful stone staircase through the forest. Enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-capped peaks.

After spending some memorable moments at the viewpoint, descend to your hotel in Ghorepani and enjoy breakfast.

Following breakfast, pack your belongings and begin trekking downhill towards Banthanti, passing through beautiful forest trails and traditional mountain landscapes. Upon reaching Banthanti, your private Jeep will be waiting to pick you up.

Enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours along the winding and sometimes bumpy mountain road to Pokhara.

Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy your free time exploring the beautiful lakeside city, relaxing at a café, shopping, or simply unwinding after your wonderful Himalayan adventure.

It starts with a drive or flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, and ends the trek at Banthati, then we drive to Pokhara, spend 2 nights in Pokhara, we make one full day sightseeing trip in Pokhara, then drive to Kathmandu. We will arrange some beautiful and comfortable tour packages in Kathmandu in case you have some additional time available.

Permits: You need Annapurna Conservation Area Project permits and a TIMS permit, including trekking insurance for your trekking crews. The permit costs approximately USD 30 for foreigners (non-SAARC nationals) and USD 10 for SAARC nationals

Cash: Have enough Nepalese Rupees (NPR) as ATMs are scarce on the trail, and credit cards are rarely accepted

Transportation: Deluxe tourist bus from KTM to Pokhara-  4x4 Jeep to Kande and Banthanti- Pokhara. And deluxe tourist bus drive back to KTM. If you want to fly from KTM-PKR-KTM, we can arrange domestic flight tickets on your demand with additional flight costs.

Walking Trails: The trail often goes through the beautiful forest, ancient typical cultures villages, waterfalls, staircases, wilder pastures, ridges and several viewpoints till the buttom of the mountains, crosses several suspension bridges, wild bees, natural hot springs, zig-zags up and down, and passes several river streams.

Walking hours per day: The itinerary is always eligible; every day, your trek starts after your breakfast. Take your own speed,  enjoy your walking and the views. Normally, walking hours will be 4-8 hours  per day. Early starts for Mardi Himal base camp and tough walking of 11 hours if you want to go to visit Khayar ( holy Lake).

Landscape & temperature: There are amazing landscapes on this trek, it is a very comfortable temperature, and a greenery region. Very beautiful hills and hillocks, wide ranges of high mountains with beautiful views. Horizontal meadows and wide valleys with perfect temperatures. Alpine conture with rocky mountains, face to face mountains. Minus 5 degree at night at Khopra Danda in November then everywhere is comfortable temperature.

Accommodations and Food: Everywhere we can find very neat and clean local lodges and hotels with the best food items. We can select the food according to our choices on the hotel's Menu.  Almost the Menu is similar to everywhere. They provide normal but rooms with clean beds. They have a very wide, clean, and warm dining room. They provide common hot showers bathroom. Attached bath room in Mardi side and at Khopra Danda is impossible then everywhere it is possible.

Maximum altitude: One overnight at Mardi highcamp at 3500 meters and hiking to Mardi Base camp reach up to 4,500 meters for the best view. One overnight at Khopra Danda at 3800 Meters and approximately up to 5000 meters for next day excurson. If you go to visit Khayar Lake ( holy lake) 4600 meters then, in many parts you should get closer to 5000 meters.

Drinking water: Everywhere you can get fresh running water, but we recommend using some purifier tablets or a filtered water or you can buy mineral water or filtered water.

Altitude Sickness: You should not be worried about altitude sickness in this trek. However, the Mountain has its own discipline, you cannot turn the character of the mountain into your character. Follow the theory of going higher and sleeping at a lower altitude. Go slower, drink enough water, take enough acclimatization, and supply enough energy. You may feel a bit of altitude symptomps at Khayar Lake visit. Other wise you should not be worried about the altitude sickness on this trip. We reccomend for some medicine against altitude sickness or descending at lower altitude if some one get altitude sickness.

Best Time to Trek:

The Annapurna Balcony trekking can be trekked year-round, but the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to December) seasons offer the best conditions:

Autumn (September - November): Widely considered the best time. The weather is generally stable, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and excellent mountain views. Trails are not dusty, and the nights are clear for stargazing.

Spring (March - May): Another excellent period. You'll witness blooming rhododendrons completely around the widely spread forests and other wildflowers, with pleasant temperatures and good visibility.

Winter (December - February): It is possible for trekking around this area. There will be clear skies, good visibility and less trekkers. Warm gears are necessary for the Morning and for the night. The higher elevations will be covered with snow, it can be extremely chalenging and cold.

Monsoon (June-August): We do not recommend this trek in the Monsoon due to heavy rainfall, muddy and slippery trails, leaches in the grasses, river streams will be flooded, limited visibility, and the risk of landslides.  Also can be stocked the road by landslide.
