Ghorepani

We hire a private Jeep from Pokhara to Banthanti, as local shared Jeeps operate according to their own schedules and are not frequent enough to suit our preferred timing and destination.

The scenic drive takes us to Banthanti, the road’s endpoint for our planned trekking route. From there, we begin our trek through a beautiful, dense rhododendron forest, passing through Nangethanti before reaching the charming mountain village of Ghorepani, at approximately 2,850 m above sea level.

Upon arrival, we will check into a comfortable mountain lodge for an overnight stay. After a rewarding day of driving and trekking, we can relax in the warm, fire-heated dining room, enjoy a hearty meal, and soak up the welcoming atmosphere of this beautiful Himalayan village.

Poonhill

Wake up early in the morning for an unforgettable hike to Poon Hill (3,210 m), approximately one hour uphill through beautiful rhododendron forest. Arrive at the viewpoint before sunrise and witness the first golden rays illuminating the magnificent Himalayan peaks.

Poon Hill is one of the Annapurna region’s most celebrated panoramic viewpoints, offering spectacular views of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), and Mt. Annapurna I (8,091 m), along with Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Lamjung Himal, Gurja Himal, Nilgiri Himal, Tilicho Himal, and Dhampus Peak. The breathtaking panorama of snow-covered mountains, rolling hills, forested ridges, and the expansive Kali Gandaki Valley creates a truly unforgettable Himalayan sunrise experience.

After enjoying the spectacular scenery and taking photographs, descend to your lodge in Ghorepani for a hearty breakfast. Once refreshed, continue trekking through enchanting forests filled with rhododendron trees and other Himalayan vegetation toward Banthanti. Enjoy the peaceful woodland trails and take a break for lunch along the way.

Chhomrong is a charming hillside village renowned for its welcoming local culture and magnificent views of the surrounding Himalayan Mountains, including Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Take a well-deserved lunch break here and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery before continuing your journey.

From there, the trail climbs gradually along the opposite side of the valley, passing through peaceful bamboo groves, lush rhododendron woodlands, and oak forests. The changing landscape and refreshing forest atmosphere make this section of the trek particularly enjoyable.

Continue ascending toward Sinuwa, a scenic mountain settlement overlooking the surrounding green hills and deep valleys. Upon arrival, check into a local lodge and relax after a rewarding day on the trail.

Enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere and prepare for the next stage of your journey deeper into the spectacular Annapurna Sanctuary.

Mt. Fishtail

After breakfast in Sinuwa Danda, begin the day’s trek toward Himalaya, following a scenic trail through lush rhododendron, bamboo, and hemlock forests adorned with orchids, ferns, and other fascinating Himalayan vegetation.

From Khuldi, descend a steep section of stone staircases toward Bamboo. The steps can be slippery, particularly after rainfall, so take care while navigating this section. After a short rest, continue ascending over stone steps through the woodland, passing the revered Baraha Temple, a site associated with local religious traditions and cultural beliefs.

Historically, certain customs and religious restrictions were observed around the temple and in parts of the upper Annapurna region. Some traditional beliefs influenced women’s access to particular areas and their participation in lodge operations. These customs reflect local cultural history, although practices can vary between communities and over time.

As you continue uphill, the forest gradually opens to reveal rugged cliffs, rushing streams, and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery. The surroundings become more rugged as you gain altitude and approach the higher reaches of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

 Symptoms of Altitude Sickness & Prevention

The maximum altitude reached at Annapurna Base Camp is 4,200m. While not as high as some other Himalayan treks, altitude sickness is still a concern. Here are crucial prevention tips:

*Ascend Gradually: Do not rush your ascent. Stick to a well-planned itinerary that allows for gradual altitude gain

* Acclimatization Days: Although the ABC trek itinerary often doesn't have dedicated "rest days" like some other treks, try to incorporate slower days or make short acclimatization hikes (climb high, sleep low) at points like Himalaya or Deurali.

*Stay Hydrated: Drink 3-4 liters of water daily. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as they can dehydrate you.

* Eat High-Calorie Meals: Your body needs more energy at higher altitudes. Focus on carbohydrate-rich foods.

* Listen to Your Body: Pay close attention to any symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue). If symptoms persist or worsen, descend to a lower altitude immediately.

* Consider Preventive Medication: Consult your doctor about taking Acetazolamide (Diamox) as a preventive measure, especially if you have a history of altitude sickness or are concerned about the altitude.

* Proper Breathing Techniques: Practice deep breathing to improve oxygen intake.

* Layer Clothing: Dress in layers to adapt to temperature fluctuations and stay warm

*Avoid rapid altitude gain, drink enough water or fluid, acclimate to adjust the body to higher altitudes, avoid alcohol, eat regular meals, get higher and sleep at lower altitudes, and avoid high altitudes if you have heart and lung disease. The main treatment for acute mountain sickness is to stop climbing to higher altitudes and descend to a lower altitude if the symptoms occur

Best Time to Trek to Annapurna Base Camp

Autumn (September to November): This is considered the prime season due to stable weather, clear skies, and excellent mountain views. Temperatures are mild, and the monsoon rains have cleared.

Spring (March to May): Another excellent time, characterized by blooming rhododendron forests, warmer temperatures, and clear views. Towards late May, there might be an increase in rainfall as the monsoon season approaches.

Winter (December to February) is also possible but requires warmer gear as temperatures can drop significantly, and snow can be present at higher altitudes.

Monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain, making trails slippery and increasing the risk of landslides, hence it's generally not recommended.

Clothing:

* Layered clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers (short and long-sleeved), fleece jacket/pullover, waterproof and windproof outer shell jacket.

* Warm down jacket: Essential for higher altitudes, especially during evenings and mornings.

* Trekking pants/trousers: Comfortable and quick-drying.

* Warm pants for evenings: Fleece-lined track pants.

* Underwear and sports bras.

* Warm hat, buff/neck gaiter, and gloves.

* Sun hat or cap.

Footwear:

* Worn-in hiking boots: Waterproof and ankle-supportive.

* Trekking socks: Several pairs (wool or synthetic).

* Comfortable shoes/sandals: For evenings at teahouses.

Gear and Accessories:

* Daypack: For carrying daily essentials.

* Duffel bag: For your main luggage, carried by a porter.

* Sleeping bag: (Optional, but recommended for warmth, especially in colder months)

* Trekking poles: Highly recommended for stability and reducing strain on knees.

* Headlamp with extra batteries.

* Water bottle or hydration bladder: At least 2-3 liters capacity. Consider a water filter or purification tablets.

* Sunglasses (UV protected).

* Sunscreen and lip balm with high SPF.

* Basic first-aid kit: Including pain relievers, blister treatment, antiseptic wipes, bandages, and any personal medications.

* Toiletries: Quick-drying towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, hand sanitizer, toilet paper.

* Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit (options can be limited on the trail).
